The first cases of COVID-19 (SARS-CoV-2) started to appear in China during the end of November 2019 but it took over a month for the Chinese government to official report this new situation to the WHO. However, 2020 has never been a slow news year and people were distracted by a possibility of WWIII and Australia having massive forest fires in January. Slowly during January and February 2020 people caught wind of this new coronavirus that was supposedly started in a wet market in Wuhan, China. As more people caught on to what was happening with COVID-19, there was an ever increasing amount of memes created that specifically related to the now pandemic. Following is a short timeline of a few of the major milestones in the development of the pandemic and then a selection of the COVID-19 memes (most found, some created) ordered in such a way in order to show some of the collective thoughts and feelings of those at the time.
- Dec. 31, 2019: The Chinese government officially confirms with the WHO that a mysterious pneumonia is sickening dozens in Wuhan, China
- Jan. 11, 2020: China reports 1st novel coronavirus death
- Jan. 21, 2020: 1st confirmed case in the United States
- Jan. 23, 2020: China imposes strict lockdown in Wuhan
- Jan. 30, 2020: WHO declares global health emergency
- Feb. 29, 2020: 1st death reported in United States
- March 13, 2020: Trump declares national emergency
- March 17, 2020: Coronavirus now present in all 50 states
- March 27, 2020: Trump signs $2 trillion stimulus bill
- April 2, 2020: Global cases hit 1 million
- May 27, 2020: US reaches 100,000 deaths
- May 31, 2020: George Floyd's killing spurs mass protests
- June 30, 2020: EU says it will reopen borders to 14 countries, but not the US
- Sept. 22, 2020: US reaches 200,000 deaths
