Abstract
Old Time music, an acculturation of music styles from the British Isles and performance practices from Africa, has
been an integral part of the Appalachian Mountains for hundreds of years. By looking at the history of the Old Time genre, we can see the ways in which it is changing. Upon examination of the techniques that give Old Time music its sound, we can see a peek into the lives of the players. Finally, a revamp of the Nationwide Insurance commercial jingle into an Old Time tune is shown as a demonstration of how old material can be re-conceptualized with genre specific techniques into a brand new piece of music.
